sandoval lake catamaran Those who wish a shorter or more economical trip to excellent lowland rain forest of Peru should visit Sandoval Lake Lodge. To reach Sandoval Lake, you boat 25 minutes down the Madre de Dios River from the city of Puerto Maldonado and then walk or ride in our rickshaws for 45 minutes along two miles (3 km) of flat, rain forest trail. Sandoval Lake is considered by rainforest specialists as the best and most attractive lake in the Peruvian rain forest.

sandoval lake Giant Otters, or "river wolf", hunt for fish in Sandoval Lake for an exciting display of one of the world's rarest and most endangered mammal species. Blue-and-gold and Red-bellied Macaws inhabit the flooded palm forest on the west end of Sandoval Lake. Brown Capuchin, Bolivian Squirrel, Red Howler, Saddle-backed Tamarin, and Night monkeys live in the forests surrounding the lake.

Sandoval Lodge
Sandoval Lake is an "oxbow lake" formed generations ago by the shifting waters of the Madre de Dios River. Once a river changes course, a length of the river, usually in a horse-shoe shape, is left land-locked. Sandoval with its clear, calm waters has evolved into a mature lake environment attacking myriad species of wildlife and flora.

Birding Sandoval: a pristine Wilderness of Amazonia Situated just beyond the eastern slopes of the Andes Mountains, the 3.7 million acre Tambopata-Candamo Reserved Zone is home to almost 1000 species of birds, and 4 of the Amazon Basin's top predators the Jaguar, Giant Otter, Harpy Eagle and Black Caiman. Nestled within this protected area of lush tropical rain forest, perched above what many rain forest specialists feel is the most attractive lake in southern Peru, is Sandoval Lake Lodge.

A 40-minute riverboat ride from Puerto Maldonado down the Madre de Dios River followed by a walk or slow ride on a custom rain forest rickshaw for 2-miles on a flat, wide trail through tall primary forest brings a visitor to Sandoval Lake. Aboard small canoes and platform catamarans guests traverse the exotic flooded forest of Maruritia palms and across the scenic lake to Sandoval Lake Lodge.

Sandoval Lake Lodge:
• 25 double-occupancy rooms with private baths and hot water showers.
• Spacious dining room, community area with hammocks, and a fully stocked bar.
• All rooms and communal areas are equipped with ceiling fans.
